Inspiration from the Sidewinder

Inspiration from the Sidewinder Inspiration from the Sidewinder Inspiration from the SidewinderIn recent years, the field of robotics has been inspired by some seriously fast animals. From the lightning fast cheetah to the gravity-defying hummingbird. Now inspiration is coming from a new source in the animal kingdom the snake.More known for its poisonous characteristics than for the quickness of its movements, a team at Georgia Tech has found they are under the spell of the snakethe sidewinder, specifically. It may take a backseat to the rattler and boa constrictor in terms of infamy, but assistant professor of physics Daniel Goldman assures us the sidewinder snake should not be overlooked.I welches part of building a sand swimming robot with servos, he explains. It got me thinking that we really could use these robots, particularly in these granular environments, as an essential tool to understand the biology. A good part of this was because we didnt necessarily have the mathematica l models of the environment. From the biophysics point of view, like how snakes move around, it was interesting. Then a colleague, David Hu, said that sidewinders look so crazy and they only hang out in sandy, loose environments so why is their gait so good? That set the wheels in motion and collaboration increased. Joe Mendelson (at Zoo Atlanta) helped coordinate the building of a shed in the back of a zoo with a device called a fluidized bed. Its basically a bed of sand with a porous bottom where you can flow air up and the sand bubbles and turns into a fluid, he says. And it ultimately allows the animal to not experience tracks of the animals before, Goldman says.Studying the unique motion of sidewinder snakes. Shown (l-r) are Dan Goldman of Georgia Tech, Hamid Marvi of Carnegie Mellon and Joe Mendelson of Zoo Atlanta. Image Rob Felt / Georgia TechSidewinders were brought in and they found these snakes were great collaborators themselves, sidewinding almost on command, he says. I was also collaborating with Howie Choset Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Professor and he was building snake robots for a long time and was interested in them for search and rescue, but his robots were having trouble with sandy slopes. He teamed up with us and he brought a robot to the zoo. We could manipulate the parameters in a way we like to do as physicists and landsee how sensitive locomotion is to it. On flat sand, its not sensitive but on kilted, on sand dunes, it is. Sidewinding ends up being a gait thats quite good on level sand. And its really good on slopes, providing a flexible way to control your body. This helped the Modsnake at Carnegie Mellon University, a robot that is a meter long with 16 modules. Over here, we do it like a physicist, we dont do it like the real world. We want it to work in a laboratory. We had one postdoc make a 3D printed sidewinding multilink robot. What we discovered was to generate sidewinding you can use ways to make sidewinding what you w ould see in animals and, in some ways, what you wouldnt.Goldman says the work showed him that not only is the sidewinder snake relatively simple to think about but its relatively simple to control. Its a beautiful and effective way to move, he says. And yet how easy it could be to overlook this snake.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Sidewinding ends up being a gait thats quite good on level sand. And its really good on slopes, providing a flexible way to control your body.Prof. Daniel Goldman, Georgia Tech

How a brag book can help land your next job or promotion

How a brag book can help land your next job or promotion How a brag book can help land your next job or promotion It’s easy to spot a  resume  that’s written in a hurry or without a lot of care. It includes a lot of bullet points that don’t really express someone’s value. All the bullet points are structured like this: “action word + task.” It’s akin to writing, “Breathes air at work.” This doesn’t feel like much of a differentiator, does it?Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! For the last three years, I’ve been hiring attorneys, paralegals, and legal staff at my firm. I’ve hired more than 40% of my firm’s current workforce and a poorly written resume is a dead giveaway of someone who is wasting my time and their own. Some of the best  resumes  that have come across my desk all have one thing in common: they include strong value statements.  A value statement  is a statement expressing the person’s value to their existing employer or organization. The key to writ ing a really great value statement starts with understanding your own value, which is easier said than done. Value can be expressed in various ways, but keeping track of it over long periods of time can be hard to do. That’s why I recommend keeping a Brag Book. What Is a Brag Book?A Brag Book is simply a place where you keep track of all your accomplishments and document your own performance. Brag Books can come in many forms and have many names. I’ve heard of senior leaders keeping “I Love Myself Memos” or a folder in Outlook with all the nice compliments their peers or clients have given them. Whatever the methodology for tracking, the purpose is always the same: keep tabs on your progress to help you communicate your value later on.My personal style is a bit old school, but I use an Excel file where I keep a list of projects, significant responsibilities, financial goals and results, awards, qualitative achievements, and skills. I track my progress in qualitative and quant itative values on a monthly basis and take time quarterly to write out value statements based on major projects. Every six months I review my value statements for the strongest ones and update my resume and LinkedIn accordingly. The result? If ever I need an updated resume, my current draft is never more than 6 months old and I’m not scrambling to do all the heavy editing right before I need it. I simply pull my value statements together into one document and use it to craft my self-evaluation.How to Write a Good Value StatementA value statement should provide scope, magnitude, and explain the impact of your accomplishment. Personally, I really like using a Google formula to plug in my key data points and accomplishments from my Brag Book. The formula is simple: Did X by doing Y resulting in Z.Let’s compare two statements, one using the “action word + task” formula and one using the Google formula. Here’s a quick example:“Learned to write a brag book by listening to this p odcast resulting in my ability to write better resumes, be better prepared for my annual performance reviews, and improve my ability to express my value to my organization.”“Learned to write a brag book by listening to this podcast.”The result of your accomplishments and how it impacted your growth and your organization’s growth convey your value and are a helpful nudge to your audience (your boss, the hiring manager, the recruiter, etc.) that you are worth investing in â€" whatever the price tag.Benefits of Keeping a Brag BookThere are many benefits of keeping a Brag Book. First, they take the guesswork out of trying to remember your accomplishments should you need a resume update and second, they make annual performance reviews less daunting because they provide a clear outline of everything you’ve accomplished in the year. Most importantly, they help you avoid underwhelming differentiators (like in our earlier example: no one’s impressed by your air-breathing, Brenda!) . It’s not easy to keep tabs on all your achievements off the top of your head, but with a Brag Book, you don’t have to!You deserve the time and dedication it takes to keep tabs on your accomplishments. Take a minute each month to acknowledge the great things you’re doing every day and put those numbers and well-written value statements down on paper.Ready to Get Your Brag On?Download my Brag Book Checklist here  for help with writing your value statements and analyzing your past achievements, and let me know how your Brag Book comes together! And if you’d like to learn even more about landing your next big promotion, join my free online workshop June 5th to learn how to make your Promotion Plan a reality. 10 Traits of Successful People Who Get Promoted - The Muse

10 Traits of Successful People Who Get Promoted - The Muse 10 Traits of Successful People Who Get Promoted In these competitive times, advancing in your career is far from automatic. Those who sit back and wait for things to happen for them often end up frustrated, disillusioned, and burned out. In contrast, those who look for opportunities and seize them seem to have “better luck” than others. Of course, it’s not luck at all. If you’re looking to move ahead in the workplace, you’d do well to learn from those who seize the day and seem to advance easily. Here are the top 10 traits of people who advance in their careers. 1. They Enjoy a Challenge Too many people, when faced with a time-consuming project or a lengthy assignment, try to shirk their responsibilities or “delegate” them to others. But those who advance don’t shrink away from challenges and adversity. They see these times as opportunities to learn and grow- a new project, a new boss, or a new office are all chances to grow in a new way. To advance in your career, embrace challenges instead of shrinking away. Not only will your skill set come out stronger as a result, your manager and other company higher-ups will see you taking the initiative. Remember, rewards come to those who stand out- not those who blend into the background. 2. They See Failures as Opportunities Dealing with failures as a professional is very difficult. You feel as if you’ve let yourself and your colleagues down. However, those who advance in their industries see failures as opportunities. Rather than blaming others or beating themselves up for making a mistake, they learn from their experience and focus on doing better in the future. When you see failure as an opportunity to grow, you’ll be less prone to the emotional upset associated with it and you’ll advance in your career more quickly. 3. They Possess Confidence It’s amazing how an aura of capability makes people think you really are capable. Those who advance quickly possess confidence- in themselves, their work, and their career plan. This confidence helps others trust them, which helps them be seen as leaders. As you pursue your next promotion, remember to build and exude confidence. Even if you’re a naturally shy person, you can learn to change the way you hold yourself, your body language, the tone of your voice, and more with consistent practice. 4. They Are Optimistic No one likes to be around a co-worker who constantly complains and sees the negative in everything. Those who advance quickly are optimistic, seeing solutions instead of problems. They aren’t unwilling to admit to challenges, but instead, they look for ways to overcome them. To advance more quickly in your career, try looking on the brighter side. If optimism doesn’t come naturally to you, practice at home by writing down three to five things a day that you’re grateful for. These can be small things- like the fact that you hit a green light at a busy intersection. No matter what you write down, learning to see the good throughout your life will carry over into your performance at the office. 5. They Are Open to Feedback Being coachable is a major part of succeeding in business. Those who are promoted rapidly take feedback well and are able to learn from it and implement changes. Instead of seeing feedback as criticism of your work, see it as constructive- you’ll be on the path to moving ahead quickly. If criticism tends to throw you- leaving you either angry with rage or teary with disappointment- learn to take a few minutes to compose yourself before responding to the feedback. Try saying something like, “I appreciate the feedback, but I’d like to take a few minutes to reflect on it privately. Can we discuss this further in an hour?” 6. They Look for a Mentor Having someone on your side who can advocate for you is a big part of being promoted swiftly. Those who are successful seek out mentors whom they can learn from. Then, they also benefit from that manager or leader advocating for them or pointing out potential opportunities to take on new responsibilities. Look for a mentor in your company who can help get you on the fast track, but don’t take the mentor-mentee relationship lightly. If a senior manager offers to assist you in this way, either in a formal or informal mentorship capacity, be respectful of his or her time and do your best to repay the favor whenever possible. 7. They Are Flexible While succeeding isn’t about giving up all your nights and weekends, being flexible has its advantages. Sometimes being flexible isn’t about more hours at all- it’s just as much about being willing to head up a project when you expected a quiet month in the office. To succeed in your career, do your best to be more flexible with the changing demands of the business. Your boss will notice. 8. They Focus on Results In business, it’s not about whose job a task is- it’s about getting the task done. Those who advance quickly focus on results- their own, their department’s, and the company’s. They don’t waste time with blaming or shifting responsibility. They dig in and get the work done. When you do this in your work, you’ll be positioning yourself well for success. 9. They Aspire for More Sometimes, the only difference between someone who gets promoted and someone who doesn’t is the “want it” factor. When you make it known that you aspire for more from your job and company, you’ll put yourself out there as someone who’s available for additional responsibility and promotion. Of course, you’ll need to be careful with this one. Gossiping openly about how you deserve a better title isn’t going to do you any favors, so learn to show, not tell. Make it clear to your immediate supervisor that you’re interested in advancement opportunities, but also prove that you’re willing to put in the work to be worthy of them. 10. They Are Good at Negotiation It’s no secret that it’s hard to create win-win situations on the job. Often, no matter how hard you work to avoid it, some people feel short-changed in a situation, while others feel they won. Those who succeed quickly are those who learn to help everyone feel great about a particular outcome and stress the positive points for everyone involved. The good news about all 10 of these traits is that they can be learned and developed. Don’t feel like those who advance rapidly in their careers are somehow better than you. They’ve simply mastered these 10 traits and used them to their best advantage. With a little practice, you can too. The freelancers guide to ultimate productivity with Mac OS

The freelancers guide to ultimate productivity with Mac OS The freelancers guide to ultimate productivity with Mac OS “So, what do you do?”It’s a question I kind of dread. Not because I’m unemployed, far from it. More because the answer is complicated enough to be awkward. I’m a writer, project manager, business representative, historian, podcaster, voice actor, and probably some other things I can’t remember right now. That means two things. First, I need a really good resume (view here) so potential employers can wrap their head around what on earth I really do. Second, I really need a great system to stay productive and organized. This is how I do the latter.Visit and create an outstanding resume too.The BasicsTo start, I do all of this with a Macbook Pro. Still, I have to point out that all of this is more or less possible with a Windows or Linux machine if you customize it enough. That said, the foundation of my organizational system is multiple desktops.Multiple DesktopsSo I generally have 8 desktops open at any time. I don’t use them all, but I always have at least one with noth ing in it in case I need a quick place to put some new work. Each desktop is set for a specific task. In this case:Desktop 1: The Personal StuffMy first desktop is the only real constant in this picture. It’s for personal things, fun things. It contains my personal email, facebook, and whatever I’m reading. I generally keep it on the left side of my desktops because it’s always relevant and it helps to have it in the same place at all times. I always know if I want my personal stuff I just swipe left a few times and I’m there.Related articles:Why we love (and hate) personal resumes7 Mistakes That Are Common In College Students Resumes and How to Fix ThemA recruiter explains how to make your resume stand outDesktop 2: This ArticleSo after the personal desktop, each one is set to one task. This article for example. Desktop 2 has a slack channel, some articles I’m using for reference, and a Google Doc. That makes for three windows, each with one or two tabs open (that’s imp ortant for later). What this all means is that everything in this desktop is connected to writing this article and if I swipe up with four fingers I immediately see everything I have on this desktop. That translates into clarity and visibility.Desktop 3: Project ManagementI also help manage a project creating an online education platform about entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa. Here I’ve got three windows, one for the various Trello boards associated with this project, another with a few articles I need to read on that subject, and a final one with updates from the company. So this desktop is for managing the project, but if I need to write a lesson, I’ll use another desktop to keep my total number of windows and tabs down. Plus, if I’m writing a lesson I don’t need to have easy access to these project management tools.Desktop 4: Lesson WritingHere I’m writing a lesson for the project mentioned in Desktop 3. I’ve got an excel document open with all the transcribed int erviews I’m basing the lesson on in addition to a Google Doc and a page containing the outline and request for the lesson. Once again, I’ve got only three windows each with no more than three tabs.Desktops 5-7: Free SpaceI always try to make sure I have at least one blank desktop. That means if anything new comes up which isn’t connected to an additional task, I have a place to put it. It also means I always have at least one empty desktop to use as a buffer between my active and inactive tasks. Active tasks go on the left of the empty desktop(s) while inactive ones are on the right. This way I can keep track of how many things I’m actively working on at all times.Desktop 8: Inactive TasksAnything I’m not working on now but want to leave open goes here. In this case, it’s some project management windows for my work as a content creator. At the moment, I’ve completed all of my tasks there, so that desktop gets moved off to the right until it becomes active again.Organiz ing Within DesktopsTo be honest, every time I see someone with 20-30 tabs open in a single window I’m a bit horrified. Not because they’re doing too many things at once (I’m certainly as guilty as they come there) but because they have essentially no organization to it. Truth is, it’s not that hard to avoid this problem. If you read the section above, the answer should be fairly obvious. If you maintain separate desktops for your various tasks, then each time you need to open something new, this should be done within that desktop. So you shouldn’t end up with a single window in a single desktop with open web pages pertaining to 4 different projects. Then, whenever you end up with more than 4 or 5 tabs in a single window, ask yourself if you can either close some of them or create a new window for them organized around a single purpose. Whenever you get a tab pileup, this tells you that some action needs to be taken to avoid a pileup.Moving Between DesktopsI changed from usin g Windows to using Mac OS back in 2007. If you asked me why I’ve stuck with that change for all these years it wouldn’t be for the hardware, for the stability, for the aesthetic, or any of the other reasons Mac users usually give. For me, it’s all about gestures.Four fingers to the right, four fingers up, three fingers to the left, two fingers to scroll, these action are at the absolute core of how I interact with my laptop and how my organizational system works. I can have so many windows on so many desktops because I’ve set up my trackpad so I can easily move between them and see everything I have open with just a few gestures.Chances are, if this system sounds awful to you, it’s because you haven’t set up the gestures or keyboard shortcuts necessary to make it work. That’s the real key, you have to be able to easily move between all of these desktops and windows. Take that ability away and this entire system falls apart.Sounds Interesting? Try It!Please, let’s all do what we can to prevent 30 tab windows from haunting our nightmares. Stopping that particular scourge is in our hands. But I’m also curious to hear how you all organize your work? Let me know more about your system in the comments.
