Skills Not to Use in Your Resume

Skills Not to Use in Your ResumeSkills Not to Use in Your ResumeWhile writing a resume, there are some skills you need to avoid including in your resume. Like, for example, you should include only the relevant ones for the job you are applying for, elend every skill that you have got. Basically, you need to carefully choose the significant ones and put them in your resume. For the rest of the skills, just keep them to yourself. What Skills To Avoid Including In Your Resume1. Skills You Dont Actually HaveYou may be under the impression that lying in your resume is okay. Well, you are wrong. There is a limit to everything and including skills that you actually do not possess in your resume is not okay at all. If you do not have the skill required for a job position, do not apply for it. Because, it will backfire on you either during the interview or during the job period. A negative impression will be created in their minds and your reputation will be at stake. So, only include those wh ich you have actually got. 2. Irrelevant OnesAny skill. that is not relevant to the job position you are applying for, need not get to be included in your resume. They only increase the number of words and decrease the white spaces in the resume, making it harder to read. Any insignificant skill needs to be removed from your resume. The recruiters do not have a lot of time to review your resume, and if they find useless information, they will just skip it without carefully reading it. 3.Basic Skills Everyone Should HaveDo not waste your time or the recruiters time using common words. There is no need to mention the skills every job applicant should have. For example, do not list things like MS Office as a skill of yours.

How to Negotiate Salary After a Job Offer

How to Negotiate Salary After a Job OfferHow to Negotiate Salary After a Job OfferAfter several rounds of interviews, you finally land a job offer from a terrific team at a company with a bright future. Heres one last question Are you ready to negotiate salary? You may have made it through the most challenging part of the job search process, but thats an important step before you accept the offer.A new survey from Robert Half shows mora job seekers are asking for more money. Fifty-five percent of the workers - up from 39 percent in 2018 - said they tried to negotiate salary during their last job offer. In a job market where in-demand professionals often consider multiple offers, companies know they have to have some ?flexibility in their salary sortiments. According to the survey, 70 percent of hiring managers dont expect candidates to accept the anfangsbuchstabe salary offer.See the breakdowns of responses by city, from New York to Indianapolis, and by age and gender.Bottom line? Y ou have bargaining power If you dont inquire about a better compensation package, you may be leaving money on the table, especially if you have specialized skills and an impressive?resume.Of course, these can be tricky conversations. For many people, talking about money is? uncomfortable. It can feel awkward to ask for more than what youre offered. You might be afraid an employer will withdraw the offer altogether if you counter it. Here are ?eight ?tips to help you tactfully and confidently ?ask for what you want your next job1. DO familiarize yourself with industry salary trendsYou may think you deserve a higher starting salary in your new position. But what do the national and local job markets say? Information is your biggest ally.?To enter a negotiation fully informed, consult Robert Halfs annual Salary Guides ?to determine the going rate for your career path, position and experience level, and the Salary Calculator to see adjusted figures for your geographic area. If youre ?in the running ?for one of the years hottest, highest-paying jobs, the employer may be having a tough time finding someone with enough skills and experience, and that?opens the door to negotiate higher ?pay.2. DONT negotiate too early - or too lateMost employers expect to discuss a candidates desired salary in the first or second interview. Once they indicate they would like to make an offer, consider it an invitation to ask some questions. Begin with questions around benefits and other compensation areas before discussing salary. If the company doesnt bring up ?pay ?when they make ?the ?offer, dont hesitate to ask. Trying to negotiate?a salary after youve signed the contracts and agreed on a starting date is definitely too late.3. DO give a specific salarySome employers will ask about your expected salary early in the hiring process. Giving a wide pay range might seem smart, hedging your bets against pricing yourself out of a job. But if you tell a befhigung employer ?that your accep table pay range is $60,000 to $90,000, dont ?be ?surprised if youre offered $60,000. After doing your research, you should know your ?baseline salary - the number under which youd be willing to walk away from a company. Being willing to state a specific number or range will help you and the potential employer figure out if youre on the same page and if it makes sense to continue the conversation.? 4. DONT make it only about youSalary negotiations are a two-way street. When talking about your capabilities and career, you need to frame your request for higher compensation in a way that conveys what the employer will gain in return.? While youre preparing for a job interview, you should gather concrete examples of how your skills will benefit your new company, and ?when you ?get to the negotiation stage, express how excited you are to work for the company. Remember, many managers dont like negotiating, eith er. Keeping your tone positive and collegial will help you navigate the discussions.5. DO be honestSuccessful salary negotiations depend on honesty from both parties. Theres no better way to see your offer withdrawn than having a hiring manager find out you invented a competing job offer or inflated your salaries from past jobs ?to ?leverage a bigger paycheck. Skip the bluffing, and be honest about your needs and expectations.6. DONT overlook the benefitsSalary negotiations often include some give-and-take on employee benefits, not just dollars. It may be less costly for the employer to give ground on extra vacation, flexible hours or a work-from-home schedule. Consider whats valuable to you and? what would make an offer more attractive to you and your lifestyle.?If you are considering multiple offers, remember to directly compare health insurance coverage and retirement benefits to make a truly informed decision. Also keep in mind the benefits that reach beyond compensation, such as career goals and advancement opportunities with the potential employer. These things should be part of your analysis of accepting an offer.7. DO know when to wrap it upA reasonable employer wont withdraw an offer just because you tried to negotiate. But dragging out the salary negotiation can frustrate the? hiring manager and start out your relationship on a sour note. If the ?company ?cant meet your requirements after a few discussions, respectfully withdraw your application and focus on opportunities ?that better match your compensation expectations.8. DONT forget to get everything in writingOnce you and the hiring manager settle on an agreeable compensation package, ask for documentation of your salary and any special arrangements in writing, along with a brief job description and a list of responsibilities for your new role. Ensure the document is signed by both you and the employer. If youd like to get a better starting salary offer, you have to ask for it. Job seekers too ofte n accept the first salary thats offered.?Yet many companies set starting salaries as a range, with a variance of 5 or 10 percent. All it takes to find out if there is wiggle room in the budget is a simple question I was hoping for something closer to specific amount. Is that possible? Then wait for the response. How to negotiate salary at your annual reviewSalary negotiations can also come up during ?the? annual performance reviews at your current job, so if ?you think your strong performance warrants a raise, remember the ?advice highlighted above. Do your homework ?and ?present a case that shows how your work has benefited the company. That way, your compensation will better match where you are in your career and set you up for a fruitful future. The more prepared and professional you are, the more likely you are to negotiate a great salary, so again, gather as much knowledge as you can about the position and comparable salaries for your region. Know your worth, practice your pitch, and speak up for yourself. If you decide to continue your job search, learn how Robert Half can help.

No Bites on Your Resume Check These 5 Things

No Bites on Your Resume Check These 5 ThingsNo Bites on Resume? Check These 5 ThingsNo Bites on Your Resume Check These 5 ThingsYou sent out a few resumes for job openings that matched your skills. You researched the companies and demonstrated some of that new-found knowledge in your cover letters. You communicated a positive tone. You had someone else proofread your work before you submitted each resume. Then you waited, and waited and waited some mora. No calls, no emails. No response, whatsoever. What happened? If your resume submissions are getting no response, and youve verified that there are no typos or other obvious errors, maybe you overlooked one of ansicht five critical components of the job search(1) You focused on duties rather than accomplishments.Anyone can list what they did in whatever job they had. But employers dont care about your past job descriptions, they want to know how you made a difference for your past or current employer. Did you change a process to make it more efficient? Did you take on a tough project and execute it well, winning applause from your boss and others? Did you help increase sales in a key target market? These are the things would-be employers are most interested in that will increase your chance of being called in for an interview. Its not always easy to remember your outstanding accomplishments after the fact. Start keeping a journalso you can easily refer to them when you need to.(2) You didnt follow the employers directions. If the employer asks you to apply using their own web form, dont fax your resume or send an email with your resume attached (or if you do, make it a follow-up to the employer-specified method). Be aya to read the entire job description, as well as the instructions for submitting your resume.(3) You didnt market yourself effectively. In short, your cover letter and Objective or Professional Summary focused more on how the job would benefit you instead of how you and your skills would benefit the com pany. Think about it this way If a car salesperson is trying to sell you an automobile, you wont hear how your purchase would help the dealership. A big part of landing that next job is demonstrating how your skills and background would fit the job and benefit the companys growth. Remember While you obviously want a good job that can be a good fit and possibly help your career, you cant explicitly communicate that when you make your opening pitch to an employer.(4) You revealed your age, and the employer prefers someone younger.Yes, age bias is against the law in hiring, but its alive and well, and often difficult to prove. Dont give them any ammunition to prevent them from considering you. For instance, if you graduated from college in the late 1970s, dont include your graduation date on your resume. If you have more than 15 years of relevant work experience, dont detail any experience beyond that point (unless its more relevant to the job youre seeking than your more recent experi ence).(5) You didnt use enough keywords from the job description.Employers, especially the larger ones, will winnow a high number of resume submissions by scanning them electronically for keywords or phrases that come right from the job description. If you dont have a few of them in your resume, chances are you wont make that first cut.To improve your chances, compare your resume to each job posting you answer. Edit where necessary to match their wording, as long as youre not misrepresenting or stretching the truth about your background or skills. Look for specialized terms such as project leader, Cold Fusion experience, prepared software specifications and test plans, or expert in Sarbanes-Oxley compliance. If youve been guilty of one or more of these five resume infractions, correcting them may help you move past that important first hurdle having your resume read and being invited for an interview.

Four simple ways to succeed in panel interviews

Four simple ways to succeed in panel bewerbungsinterviewsFour simple ways to succeed in panel interviewsSometimes, you get a single interviewers. And sometimes, you get several, all at once youre in a room with what landseems like the whole company, all of them staring at you.Stepping into a panel job interview where executives are eager topepper you with rapid-fire questions can be a tremendous challenge, and its perfectly normal to feel intimidated by the process. Taking specific steps can help you feel more ready for a situation where you have to sell your experience to not just one person, but two, three, four, or maybe even five.Heres how to handle situations where your introduction to an organization is nothing like a one-on-one meeting.Do your research beforehandYou can never learn too much about a job interview upfront.A Monster article provides insight on how to avoid being ambushed during one, saying that you should figure out the interview format, and the recruiter in char ge of the process can most likely let you know in advance. Identify the interviewers and length of the session if you can, because you can mold your responsesmore effectively when you know what to expect. The piece says to keep in mind that no matter how uncomfortable the interview situation- you are there as a professional to learn just as much about them as they are eager to learn about you.All good advice, if you can get the information. But what if you dont know what youre walking into well in advance? Then you need some general guidance that can help you. First, be confident part of the purpose of a panel interview is to make aya you wont wilt in a group. The best way to keep this confidence is to remember that the panel is a collection of humans, just like you individuals with varying career and life experiences who are curious to learn more about you. Be sure youre fully prepared on the company and its background, as well as its executives - all of which should be information t hats publicly available.Dont get too caught up in a flurry of questionsIf you appear flustered, out of breath, or panicked, it will work against you. When it seems as if a thousand people are asking you questions, try to hold your ground as best you can on each one. Make space for your thoughts. To do that, repeat each question back if you need to check that you understood it correctly To make sure I understood correctly, youre asking what the 5-year plan for revenue would be if I were in charge? Did I get that right? Then, proceed calmly and rationally.Remember that good answers are better than fast answers. A PayScale article explains why you should pace your answers, saying that the fact that there are a ton of questions from multiple interviewers doesnt entitle you to incomplete responses. It recommends being comprehensive and calm in your answers, then moving on to following one not disregarding anyone questioning you and requesting clarification if you need to hear a question a gain. It also says to watch everyone when responding to one persons question.Dont obsess about body languageIt can be tempting to overload your brain trying to figure out who in the room likes you and who doesnt.A Lifehacker article features insight from Hannah Morgan, job search strategist and founder ofCareerSherpa.net.The article says that in terms of attention, you might want toprioritize people who are receiving you well, but Morgan says to focus it on each person present. The article continues, saying you need to win over the who dont seem to be buying it during the session, and that when responding to one interviewer, you should lock eyes with the others to see how theyre reacting to what youre saying.A word of caution try not to openly target most of your responses at people who seem to closed in the room in order to win them over. Doing so can appear desperate for their approval and attention- which will take away from the confidence youll need to project.Dont get flustered by how you think someone feels about youBut remember just because someone is smiling doesnt mean they like you, and just because someone isnt responding enthusiastically doesnt mean they dont. Keep an eye on major body-language red flags like rolling eyes or disdainful expressions, but dont make too much out of the rest. Instead, hold your ground and remember what you bring to the table.Remember that you could be reading someones body language wrong, so dont exhaust yourself trying to decode every single expression that flashes across their face as you talk. Also, everyone may not react positively to what you say, so dont forget that you cant always please everyone. Especially in a job interview, you should make sure youre reflecting your true thoughts and philosophy of work. If you bend yourself into what other people want you to think, it could cause misunderstandings down the line.Give interviewers a reason to remember your personenname afterwardThank each interviewer for their ti me with a well-executed thank-you note. After all, nothing in the job hunting process is guaranteed, so its important to remember that each person on the panel took time out of their day and their responsibilities in order to thank you.Keep it concise, friendly and make a personal connection.Failing to write a thank you note is a missed opportunity to show the interviewers youre serious about the job. There are steps you can take before, during and after panel interviews to come out on top.

Inspiration from the Sidewinder

Inspiration from the Sidewinder Inspiration from the Sidewinder Inspiration from the SidewinderIn recent years, the field of robotics has been inspired by some seriously fast animals. From the lightning fast cheetah to the gravity-defying hummingbird. Now inspiration is coming from a new source in the animal kingdom the snake.More known for its poisonous characteristics than for the quickness of its movements, a team at Georgia Tech has found they are under the spell of the snakethe sidewinder, specifically. It may take a backseat to the rattler and boa constrictor in terms of infamy, but assistant professor of physics Daniel Goldman assures us the sidewinder snake should not be overlooked.I welches part of building a sand swimming robot with servos, he explains. It got me thinking that we really could use these robots, particularly in these granular environments, as an essential tool to understand the biology. A good part of this was because we didnt necessarily have the mathematica l models of the environment. From the biophysics point of view, like how snakes move around, it was interesting. Then a colleague, David Hu, said that sidewinders look so crazy and they only hang out in sandy, loose environments so why is their gait so good? That set the wheels in motion and collaboration increased. Joe Mendelson (at Zoo Atlanta) helped coordinate the building of a shed in the back of a zoo with a device called a fluidized bed. Its basically a bed of sand with a porous bottom where you can flow air up and the sand bubbles and turns into a fluid, he says. And it ultimately allows the animal to not experience tracks of the animals before, Goldman says.Studying the unique motion of sidewinder snakes. Shown (l-r) are Dan Goldman of Georgia Tech, Hamid Marvi of Carnegie Mellon and Joe Mendelson of Zoo Atlanta. Image Rob Felt / Georgia TechSidewinders were brought in and they found these snakes were great collaborators themselves, sidewinding almost on command, he says. I was also collaborating with Howie Choset Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Professor and he was building snake robots for a long time and was interested in them for search and rescue, but his robots were having trouble with sandy slopes. He teamed up with us and he brought a robot to the zoo. We could manipulate the parameters in a way we like to do as physicists and landsee how sensitive locomotion is to it. On flat sand, its not sensitive but on kilted, on sand dunes, it is. Sidewinding ends up being a gait thats quite good on level sand. And its really good on slopes, providing a flexible way to control your body. This helped the Modsnake at Carnegie Mellon University, a robot that is a meter long with 16 modules. Over here, we do it like a physicist, we dont do it like the real world. We want it to work in a laboratory. We had one postdoc make a 3D printed sidewinding multilink robot. What we discovered was to generate sidewinding you can use ways to make sidewinding what you w ould see in animals and, in some ways, what you wouldnt.Goldman says the work showed him that not only is the sidewinder snake relatively simple to think about but its relatively simple to control. Its a beautiful and effective way to move, he says. And yet how easy it could be to overlook this snake.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Sidewinding ends up being a gait thats quite good on level sand. And its really good on slopes, providing a flexible way to control your body.Prof. Daniel Goldman, Georgia Tech

How a brag book can help land your next job or promotion

How a brag book can help land your next job or promotion How a brag book can help land your next job or promotion It’s easy to spot a  resume  that’s written in a hurry or without a lot of care. It includes a lot of bullet points that don’t really express someone’s value. All the bullet points are structured like this: “action word + task.” It’s akin to writing, “Breathes air at work.” This doesn’t feel like much of a differentiator, does it?Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! For the last three years, I’ve been hiring attorneys, paralegals, and legal staff at my firm. I’ve hired more than 40% of my firm’s current workforce and a poorly written resume is a dead giveaway of someone who is wasting my time and their own. Some of the best  resumes  that have come across my desk all have one thing in common: they include strong value statements.  A value statement  is a statement expressing the person’s value to their existing employer or organization. The key to writ ing a really great value statement starts with understanding your own value, which is easier said than done. Value can be expressed in various ways, but keeping track of it over long periods of time can be hard to do. That’s why I recommend keeping a Brag Book. What Is a Brag Book?A Brag Book is simply a place where you keep track of all your accomplishments and document your own performance. Brag Books can come in many forms and have many names. I’ve heard of senior leaders keeping “I Love Myself Memos” or a folder in Outlook with all the nice compliments their peers or clients have given them. Whatever the methodology for tracking, the purpose is always the same: keep tabs on your progress to help you communicate your value later on.My personal style is a bit old school, but I use an Excel file where I keep a list of projects, significant responsibilities, financial goals and results, awards, qualitative achievements, and skills. I track my progress in qualitative and quant itative values on a monthly basis and take time quarterly to write out value statements based on major projects. Every six months I review my value statements for the strongest ones and update my resume and LinkedIn accordingly. The result? If ever I need an updated resume, my current draft is never more than 6 months old and I’m not scrambling to do all the heavy editing right before I need it. I simply pull my value statements together into one document and use it to craft my self-evaluation.How to Write a Good Value StatementA value statement should provide scope, magnitude, and explain the impact of your accomplishment. Personally, I really like using a Google formula to plug in my key data points and accomplishments from my Brag Book. The formula is simple: Did X by doing Y resulting in Z.Let’s compare two statements, one using the “action word + task” formula and one using the Google formula. Here’s a quick example:“Learned to write a brag book by listening to this p odcast resulting in my ability to write better resumes, be better prepared for my annual performance reviews, and improve my ability to express my value to my organization.Ӊ€œLearned to write a brag book by listening to this podcast.”The result of your accomplishments and how it impacted your growth and your organization’s growth convey your value and are a helpful nudge to your audience (your boss, the hiring manager, the recruiter, etc.) that you are worth investing in â€" whatever the price tag.Benefits of Keeping a Brag BookThere are many benefits of keeping a Brag Book. First, they take the guesswork out of trying to remember your accomplishments should you need a resume update and second, they make annual performance reviews less daunting because they provide a clear outline of everything you’ve accomplished in the year. Most importantly, they help you avoid underwhelming differentiators (like in our earlier example: no one’s impressed by your air-breathing, Brenda!) . It’s not easy to keep tabs on all your achievements off the top of your head, but with a Brag Book, you don’t have to!You deserve the time and dedication it takes to keep tabs on your accomplishments. Take a minute each month to acknowledge the great things you’re doing every day and put those numbers and well-written value statements down on paper.Ready to Get Your Brag On?Download my Brag Book Checklist here  for help with writing your value statements and analyzing your past achievements, and let me know how your Brag Book comes together! And if you’d like to learn even more about landing your next big promotion, join my free online workshop June 5th to learn how to make your Promotion Plan a reality. Job Duties The Office of Air and Marine within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection claims to be the largest air and marine law enforcement agency in the world. With more than 300 vessels, Marine Interdiction Agents make up a large portion of that force and play a big part in the CBPs mission of maintaining safe and secure borders. CBP Marine Interdiction Agents are specially trained federal law enforcement agents who operate on boats and ships. They investigate and interdict - or intercept - dangerous people, vehicles, and materials to keep them from entering the U.S., to enforce immigration and trade laws and to support counter-terrorism efforts. The main enforcement focus areas for Marine Interdiction Agents are illegal immigration, drugs, weapons, counter-terrorism, and anti-smuggling operations. These agents spend their days on vessels around the U.S., on the oceans, rivers, and great lakes. Because much of the job is spent on water, agents have to be ready to face all sorts of dangerous and uncomfortable conditions, including large waves and surf, bad weather, dark nights on the water and even high-speed and potentially dangerous boat pursuits. Salary Depending on what level of the federal pay scale you are eligible to be hired at, you can earn between $50,000 and $90,000 base pay, not including federal health care benefits, law enforcement availability pay, or locality pay. Requirements To be eligible for hire as a marine interdiction agent, you must be less than 40 years old unless you have prior military or other federal employment experience. You must hold either a Masters License, Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel license, or a Deck Mates license, all issued by the United States Coast Guard. You are also required to have at least one year of prior law enforcement experience, which means you must be eligible to meet the minimum qualifications to become a police officer. It also means you need to complete a police academy, get hired, and complete at least your first year on the job as a police officer before you can even apply to become a marine interdiction agent. Once youve applied, you need to be able to pass an extensive background investigation that will include a polygraph exam. That means you need to keep your background clean and avoid common mistakes that can get you disqualified, such as drug use and other criminal behavior. Considerations U.S. Customs and Border Protections Marine Interdiction Agents have  unique, fascinating, and very exciting jobs supporting their agency and the Department of Homeland Securitys mission of domestic security. If you enjoy working on the water and are looking for an opportunity to serve your country, a job as a marine interdiction agent with the CBP is likely a great career choice for you.

10 Traits of Successful People Who Get Promoted - The Muse

10 Traits of Successful People Who Get Promoted - The Muse 10 Traits of Successful People Who Get Promoted In these competitive times, advancing in your career is far from automatic. Those who sit back and wait for things to happen for them often end up frustrated, disillusioned, and burned out. In contrast, those who look for opportunities and seize them seem to have “better luck” than others. Of course, it’s not luck at all. If you’re looking to move ahead in the workplace, you’d do well to learn from those who seize the day and seem to advance easily. Here are the top 10 traits of people who advance in their careers. 1. They Enjoy a Challenge Too many people, when faced with a time-consuming project or a lengthy assignment, try to shirk their responsibilities or “delegate” them to others. But those who advance don’t shrink away from challenges and adversity. They see these times as opportunities to learn and grow- a new project, a new boss, or a new office are all chances to grow in a new way. To advance in your career, embrace challenges instead of shrinking away. Not only will your skill set come out stronger as a result, your manager and other company higher-ups will see you taking the initiative. Remember, rewards come to those who stand out- not those who blend into the background. 2. They See Failures as Opportunities Dealing with failures as a professional is very difficult. You feel as if you’ve let yourself and your colleagues down. However, those who advance in their industries see failures as opportunities. Rather than blaming others or beating themselves up for making a mistake, they learn from their experience and focus on doing better in the future. When you see failure as an opportunity to grow, you’ll be less prone to the emotional upset associated with it and you’ll advance in your career more quickly. 3. They Possess Confidence It’s amazing how an aura of capability makes people think you really are capable. Those who advance quickly possess confidence- in themselves, their work, and their career plan. This confidence helps others trust them, which helps them be seen as leaders. As you pursue your next promotion, remember to build and exude confidence. Even if you’re a naturally shy person, you can learn to change the way you hold yourself, your body language, the tone of your voice, and more with consistent practice. 4. They Are Optimistic No one likes to be around a co-worker who constantly complains and sees the negative in everything. Those who advance quickly are optimistic, seeing solutions instead of problems. They aren’t unwilling to admit to challenges, but instead, they look for ways to overcome them. To advance more quickly in your career, try looking on the brighter side. If optimism doesn’t come naturally to you, practice at home by writing down three to five things a day that you’re grateful for. These can be small things- like the fact that you hit a green light at a busy intersection. No matter what you write down, learning to see the good throughout your life will carry over into your performance at the office. 5. They Are Open to Feedback Being coachable is a major part of succeeding in business. Those who are promoted rapidly take feedback well and are able to learn from it and implement changes. Instead of seeing feedback as criticism of your work, see it as constructive- you’ll be on the path to moving ahead quickly. If criticism tends to throw you- leaving you either angry with rage or teary with disappointment- learn to take a few minutes to compose yourself before responding to the feedback. Try saying something like, “I appreciate the feedback, but I’d like to take a few minutes to reflect on it privately. Can we discuss this further in an hour?” 6. They Look for a Mentor Having someone on your side who can advocate for you is a big part of being promoted swiftly. Those who are successful seek out mentors whom they can learn from. Then, they also benefit from that manager or leader advocating for them or pointing out potential opportunities to take on new responsibilities. Look for a mentor in your company who can help get you on the fast track, but don’t take the mentor-mentee relationship lightly. If a senior manager offers to assist you in this way, either in a formal or informal mentorship capacity, be respectful of his or her time and do your best to repay the favor whenever possible. 7. They Are Flexible While succeeding isn’t about giving up all your nights and weekends, being flexible has its advantages. Sometimes being flexible isn’t about more hours at all- it’s just as much about being willing to head up a project when you expected a quiet month in the office. To succeed in your career, do your best to be more flexible with the changing demands of the business. Your boss will notice. 8. They Focus on Results In business, it’s not about whose job a task is- it’s about getting the task done. Those who advance quickly focus on results- their own, their department’s, and the company’s. They don’t waste time with blaming or shifting responsibility. They dig in and get the work done. When you do this in your work, you’ll be positioning yourself well for success. 9. They Aspire for More Sometimes, the only difference between someone who gets promoted and someone who doesn’t is the “want it” factor. When you make it known that you aspire for more from your job and company, you’ll put yourself out there as someone who’s available for additional responsibility and promotion. Of course, you’ll need to be careful with this one. Gossiping openly about how you deserve a better title isn’t going to do you any favors, so learn to show, not tell. Make it clear to your immediate supervisor that you’re interested in advancement opportunities, but also prove that you’re willing to put in the work to be worthy of them. 10. They Are Good at Negotiation It’s no secret that it’s hard to create win-win situations on the job. Often, no matter how hard you work to avoid it, some people feel short-changed in a situation, while others feel they won. Those who succeed quickly are those who learn to help everyone feel great about a particular outcome and stress the positive points for everyone involved. The good news about all 10 of these traits is that they can be learned and developed. Don’t feel like those who advance rapidly in their careers are somehow better than you. They’ve simply mastered these 10 traits and used them to their best advantage. With a little practice, you can too. The freelancers guide to ultimate productivity with Mac OS

The freelancers guide to ultimate productivity with Mac OS The freelancers guide to ultimate productivity with Mac OS “So, what do you do?”It’s a question I kind of dread. Not because I’m unemployed, far from it. More because the answer is complicated enough to be awkward. I’m a writer, project manager, business representative, historian, podcaster, voice actor, and probably some other things I can’t remember right now. That means two things. First, I need a really good resume (view here) so potential employers can wrap their head around what on earth I really do. Second, I really need a great system to stay productive and organized. This is how I do the latter.Visit and create an outstanding resume too.The BasicsTo start, I do all of this with a Macbook Pro. Still, I have to point out that all of this is more or less possible with a Windows or Linux machine if you customize it enough. That said, the foundation of my organizational system is multiple desktops.Multiple DesktopsSo I generally have 8 desktops open at any time. I don’t use them all, but I always have at least one with noth ing in it in case I need a quick place to put some new work. Each desktop is set for a specific task. In this case:Desktop 1: The Personal StuffMy first desktop is the only real constant in this picture. It’s for personal things, fun things. It contains my personal email, facebook, and whatever I’m reading. I generally keep it on the left side of my desktops because it’s always relevant and it helps to have it in the same place at all times. I always know if I want my personal stuff I just swipe left a few times and I’m there.Related articles:Why we love (and hate) personal resumes7 Mistakes That Are Common In College Students Resumes and How to Fix ThemA recruiter explains how to make your resume stand outDesktop 2: This ArticleSo after the personal desktop, each one is set to one task. This article for example. Desktop 2 has a slack channel, some articles I’m using for reference, and a Google Doc. That makes for three windows, each with one or two tabs open (that’s imp ortant for later). What this all means is that everything in this desktop is connected to writing this article and if I swipe up with four fingers I immediately see everything I have on this desktop. That translates into clarity and visibility.Desktop 3: Project ManagementI also help manage a project creating an online education platform about entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa. Here I’ve got three windows, one for the various Trello boards associated with this project, another with a few articles I need to read on that subject, and a final one with updates from the company. So this desktop is for managing the project, but if I need to write a lesson, I’ll use another desktop to keep my total number of windows and tabs down. Plus, if I’m writing a lesson I don’t need to have easy access to these project management tools.Desktop 4: Lesson WritingHere I’m writing a lesson for the project mentioned in Desktop 3. I’ve got an excel document open with all the transcribed int erviews I’m basing the lesson on in addition to a Google Doc and a page containing the outline and request for the lesson. Once again, I’ve got only three windows each with no more than three tabs.Desktops 5-7: Free SpaceI always try to make sure I have at least one blank desktop. That means if anything new comes up which isn’t connected to an additional task, I have a place to put it. It also means I always have at least one empty desktop to use as a buffer between my active and inactive tasks. Active tasks go on the left of the empty desktop(s) while inactive ones are on the right. This way I can keep track of how many things I’m actively working on at all times.Desktop 8: Inactive TasksAnything I’m not working on now but want to leave open goes here. In this case, it’s some project management windows for my work as a content creator. At the moment, I’ve completed all of my tasks there, so that desktop gets moved off to the right until it becomes active again.Organiz ing Within DesktopsTo be honest, every time I see someone with 20-30 tabs open in a single window I’m a bit horrified. Not because they’re doing too many things at once (I’m certainly as guilty as they come there) but because they have essentially no organization to it. Truth is, it’s not that hard to avoid this problem. If you read the section above, the answer should be fairly obvious. If you maintain separate desktops for your various tasks, then each time you need to open something new, this should be done within that desktop. So you shouldn’t end up with a single window in a single desktop with open web pages pertaining to 4 different projects. Then, whenever you end up with more than 4 or 5 tabs in a single window, ask yourself if you can either close some of them or create a new window for them organized around a single purpose. Whenever you get a tab pileup, this tells you that some action needs to be taken to avoid a pileup.Moving Between DesktopsI changed from usin g Windows to using Mac OS back in 2007. If you asked me why I’ve stuck with that change for all these years it wouldn’t be for the hardware, for the stability, for the aesthetic, or any of the other reasons Mac users usually give. For me, it’s all about gestures.Four fingers to the right, four fingers up, three fingers to the left, two fingers to scroll, these action are at the absolute core of how I interact with my laptop and how my organizational system works. I can have so many windows on so many desktops because I’ve set up my trackpad so I can easily move between them and see everything I have open with just a few gestures.Chances are, if this system sounds awful to you, it’s because you haven’t set up the gestures or keyboard shortcuts necessary to make it work. That’s the real key, you have to be able to easily move between all of these desktops and windows. Take that ability away and this entire system falls apart.Sounds Interesting? Try It!Please, let’s all do what we can to prevent 30 tab windows from haunting our nightmares. Stopping that particular scourge is in our hands. But I’m also curious to hear how you all organize your work? Let me know more about your system in the comments.

Career Lessons We Learned from 2014s Super Bowl Commercials

Career Lessons We Learned from 2014s Super Bowl Commercials Career Lessons We Learned from 2014s Super Bowl Commercials Each year America celebrates the biggest television holiday of the year at the start of February. Of course, Im speaking of the Super Bowl, the biggest annual football game. Although, every year the football game itself might not feature the best match up, there is one key component of the television broadcast that keeps everyone glued to the television to see what happens next, and Im not referring to the Half-Time show. Of course, I am speaking of the Super Bowl commercials. This year, we decided to find out if the most expensive commercials run on American television had any career advice to offer us. To our surprise, there were several useful tips. Here are some highlights: 1.  Have a professional brand Stephen Colbert shared a key to career success in the spot from  Wonderful Pistachios. In this two-part commercial, the first half featured a lone Colbert sitting in a bare office. The second part showed Colbert in the same office, this time flanked by banners promoting Wonderful Pistachios, and perfectly illustrated a key component to any successful careerthe power of branding. Without a personal brand, were all just professionals sitting in an empty office selling pistachios. But when we brand ourselves with a specific style that highlights our attributes, skills, and personality, we can capture the attention of people who can advance our careers. So when branding yourself, find a way to promote your strengths and interests that represents you. Decide on your personal brand’s style of word choice, of the images you use, the sites you frequent, what you share, and how you comment. Once you have your brand in place, let it color the professional decisions you make and drive how your present yourself. 2.  Always be ready with the numbers Ford Motors Super Bowl commercial had an interesting nugget of career advice, though you may have overlooked it. The commercial, Nearly Double promoted Fords new fuel efficient Fusion and emphasized it has nearly double the fuel economy of the average vehicle. Over the course of a minute and half, the ad was relentless in reminding us nearly double the fuel efficiency. But this was for good reason! Nearly double is an impressive statistic that is easy to remember. Its great evidence for how well the Fusion can perform. When were writing resumes and being interviewed for jobs, this is what we should strive to do. Frequently refer to quantifiable statistics that demonstrate the value we bring to an organization. This will make our accomplishments easy to digest, and at the same time, memorable. So when youre applying to a job, composing a professional profile, or interviewing for a job, be sure you focus on actual tangible results youve delivered and discuss, them in the most memorable way you can. You may see nearly double the success! 3.  Have a plan B   Quarterback Tim Tebow has been an interesting phenomenon in the football experience over the last few years. A Heisman Trophy winner, BSC National Champion, and current NFL free agent, Tebow hasnt been able to keep an NFL job. Although the quarterback has seen some play time in the NFL, he hasnt landed a job that has given him a chance to succeed. But he hasnt let that stop him. In T-Mobiles No Contract, Tebow shows off exactly how much hes accomplished since he failed to land a job in the NFL. Although Tebows accomplishments featured in the ad are completely fictitious, the commercial has an important career lesson to teach us all. Always be ready with a plan B. Tebow may not have fulfilled his dream of becoming a full-time NFL quarterback, but he isnt going quietly into the night. In 2013 he was signed by ESPN and now works as a college football analyst. He is embracing a plan B. It may not be the initial career he envisioned for himself, but making the most of it regardless.  he has found an employer to drive his new career forward. In our careers, we should strive to be like Tebow. When we dont have that contact for our dream job, we dont give up. We do our best at a plan B. 4.  Seize restlessness Jeeps Super Bowl commercial Restlessness might be all the career advice you’ll ever need. During a montage of outdoors moments a narrator voice over states that restlessness starts with an itch and ends in progress. It is your ambition refusing to be bottled up. It is too easy to grow comfortable and apathetic in our careers, too easy to ignore ambition in favor of security. But in the end, simply settling will never leave us satisfied.  We must seize opportunities and move forward in our lives and in our careers. We must be ready to try new things, conquer new obstacles, and embrace change. Only then can we achieve true happiness. Its easier to regret something you have done, then something you havent! 5.  Go all the way   Coca-Colas Super Bowl commercial Going All the Way  offered a great kernel of career advice. The ad features a youth football player who, when given the chance to score an uncontested touchdown, sprints to the end zone, and keeps running. The green and yellow clad youngster doesnt stop running till he reaches the end zone of Lambeau Field. Believe it or not, this isnt just a feel-good football promotion. This is a career strategy. In your career, dont ever “just finish.” Always strive for more and dream bigger. If you want success to be proud of, look beyond the task in front of you. When we strive for greatness, rather than “just finishing,” we make the chance to do great things. Make the Lambeau leap! So as you leave the couch and head back to office this week, try to keep this career advice in mind. Dont get blindsided, clotheslined, or clipped. Be ready to make the play!

3 Tips to Ensure Your Online Presence Is Helping Your Job Search

3 Tips to Ensure Your Online Presence Is Helping Your Job Search 3 Tips to Ensure Your Online Presence Is Helping Your Job Search 3 Tips to Ensure Your Online Presence Is Helping Your Job Search Don't let your social media presence hurt your job search. Here are three personal branding tips to keep in mind. [TWEET] Unless you've been consciously avoiding it, you currently have a social media presence (or brand) whether you like it or not. Your social media presence is essentially what someone sees when they look you up online. Much like diamonds, the internet is forever, so be aware that what you do and say out there in cyberspace can follow you throughout your career. When you apply for a job, your future employers will almost certainly do at least a cursory examination of your social media presence in the process of vetting your candidacy for employment. Because of this, there are three important personal branding tips you should consider about your social media presence. 1. Create a LinkedIn profile More and more, having a LinkedIn profile is considered a basic professional requirement in most fields. If you are in a non-traditional occupation you could possibly get away without one, but even then it's a good idea for building your personal brand to establish a presence. You don't want to give the impression that you are not current with social media and technology especially if you are over forty. 2. Evaluate consistency Does your social media presence support your resume? If not, this could be a big red flag to potential employers. Failing to update your profile or include details that are on your resume makes you look sloppy. Worse is if you have completely different jobs listed. This makes you look unfocused at best and duplicitous at worst. If you don't have too much content on your LinkedIn profile, you can easily update and add some of your resume's to it. 3. Consider the content you post or share Social media is all about connections and it's important to consider what doors you would like open and what doors you would like shut when posting content. If you are posting highly personal content, you may succeed in establishing a connection point with like-minded folks, but possibly closing a door with others. You need to evaluate which is more important and post content accordingly for building your personal brand. It's also important to be mindful that unprofessional, hostile, illegal or unethical content anywhere, any time is never, ever, ever a good idea. Especially not on professional sites but even personal sites can be linked to you with very little effort. Resist the urge to post those party pics, no matter how fun they are. There is very little chance they will enhance your employability. Think of it this way if you were working, would you want your boss to see those pictures? If no, keep them offline. Use the personal branding tips above and take the time to clean up your social media profiles to ensure you present yourself as the best possible candidate for the job of your dreams. The best way to help someone and add value to their life

The best way to help someone and add value to their life The best way to help someone and add value to their life “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” - Mahatma GandhiA young woman brought her boy from their small Indian village to travel to see the great Mahatma Gandhi. From far and wide, she heard of his open-mindedness, wisdom and generosity. She was in search of knowledge, looking for answers that would help her with a problem she hoped to solve for her son. She was looking for guidance to help solve her son’s addiction. An addiction to chocolate. So she was willing to make the quest. Miles and miles, under the searing Indian sun, the woman and her son journeyed to see the wise sage. Days later, she arrived. She mustered up the courage to walk to the great Gandhi’s ashram. Her son stood there, shyly waiting, and the woman opened her mouth and the words flowed out from her lips:“Wise leader, my son has an addiction to chocolate - and I don’t know what to do. We’ve tried everything and getting him to stop has been unsuccessful. Would you p lease tell him - you will know, wise one - please tell him to stop and that this is bad for his health?”Gandhi sat there and listened patiently and with an open mind. He said that he would not give the woman advice about how to break her son’s chocolate addiction. He simply told her to return in two weeks. The woman was stunned. Nothing? This wise man whose legend she had heard about for years - he offered nothing? And why two weeks? She was baffled, but decided to return to her village with her son. Over days and nights, they traveled back home. The addiction persisted. The woman did not know what to do.Finally, after two weeks, the woman and child braved the sizzling, humid Indian sun and traveled back to Gandhi’s ashram. She hoped that Gandhi would direct her son to stop. Her wish was granted. Gandhi said:“Boy, please, stop eating chocolate. It is bad for your health. Listen to your mother and stop at once.”Hearing Gandhi dispense the directive, the boy dropped his he ad and with a sullen expression, he nodded. The mother was relieved and she thanked the old sage. They turned to leave and make the trek back to their village. But the woman couldn’t help shake her curiosity. Why did it take him two weeks to tell my son to stop eating chocolate? What did he have to think about? So she turned back around, faced Gandhi and asked him, “Why did it take you two weeks, oh wise one?Gandhi offered her a warm smile, looked up and said, “I needed to overcome my own addiction to chocolate.”Our greatest valueThis parable reminds us that the greatest help - the greatest value - that we can give to another human being is to lead by example. Our friends, co-workers and superiors aren’t looking for us to give them all the answers. They’re looking to us to lead. You? Me? We’re leaders when we back up our words with integrity. When we do what we say we’re going to do.When we deliver on the promise of living the life we are destined to live.If you wan t to help others, you must always help yourself first. If you want to advise others, be willing to follow your own advice. If you want to do great things in this world, don’t just talk about it. Take action.“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” - Mahatma GandhiThe great Gandhi refused to compromise his own values. In order for the boy to “do as Gandhi said,” Gandhi needed to first do what he was telling the boy to do. We all want to be influencers and thought leaders who help change the world in our own unique way. But what good are our words and ideas when they’re not backed by action? We live in a culture where everyone is becoming an “expert” at telling others what to do, while simultaneously not listening and following their own advice.Do you want to stand out from the crowd? Do you want to become the most helpful, valuable person in your circle of friends? Your industry? The leader that others look to for guidance? Liv e by your own example. Lead by example. And I assure you, others will follow.Lead by exampleJoin my newsletter for inspiring content. I share resources that will lead you to the life you most desire to live.
